| We all have heard of this one - http://www.breastcancerpledgeride.com/.Free breakfast to anyone who gets over $100 in pledges, was at Assiniboine Downs last year and was excellent! The rally is out to Winnipeg Beach, and it is a huge gathering of Manitoba motorcyclists. Free entry for the rally if you get $50 in pledges. If you don't want to get pledges, you can still ride for a $20 entry. It's for a great cause, so do it. Do it for your mother, do it for your wife, do it for your daughter. Do it for yourself, do it because it is right to do it. Just DO IT! (sorry for the copyright infringement) On a personal note, if I come across strong about this event and the Ride for Dad it is only because Cancer is such a personal demon for me (no pun intended). My mother had cancer of the uterus while carrying me and it almost killed me before I was born, I lost my grandmother (Oma) to stomach cancer, and a lot of my family has had cancer. When I started into my chosen field of computer support, my work practicum was at CancerCare at HSC, and they hired me out of the course. I worked there for a year and a half, where I saw something amazing....people going to work not for a paycheck but because they knew they would help someone that day. It is a big building of people who care.... And it was the worst place in the world to work. I bumped into an old buddy there one day and I asked if he was visiting someone.... He wasn't. He was there for another Kemo and radiation treatment for his lung cancer. Damn cigarettes. He died about a month and a half later. It was also the best place to work because I knew that I was helping people too.... by keeping the computers and printers and such running, I was enabling specialists and technicians, doctors and nurses to do their jobs. But research is expensive.... and it takes time and money to find a cure. So, I'll ride for my Oma, and for my Mom, and for Jane and her Mom, and for my daughter too. And I'll ride for my Dad and me, too.... I'll even ride for total strangers.... and of course, I'll ride for YOU! Ok, soapbox is gone.... I'm done. | |

| Is anyone going to the rally? We can meet ahead of time, or just meet at Assiniboia Downs for 9am on Sunday. Jane and I will be there, and a new friend as well named Jim.... another 1500 rider.
Hope to see you there! | |

| Well, it was great! We got rained on from before Stonewal to after Teulon, then it started to break up. Winnipeg Beach was cool still but sunny and packed! Good old rock band was playing, everyone was friendly, and the restaurants (and bar) were packed! By the time we hit G'Nu's at Oakbank we were glad to be riding since everyone was leather clad.... was getting warm. By the time we got back to Assiniboia Downs, it was nice and sunny and 24. Had dinner, didn't win any door or silent auction prizes, and had fun! BTW, we raised over $77,000 this year and the top male rider was pledged $3500! Of course, the top female rider was pledged $5001, but we all know that women are far better at getting pledges. Jane and I brought in $400, but Jane brought in most of it. I thought my standard biker approach of going up to someone and demanding "GIMME MONEY!" would work well, but it didn't. My court case comes up next month..... Ok, I kid about the last part. Anyway, we had fun, ran into a lot of old buddies and spread the word about Concours d'Elegance next weekend. | |
